One of “our” squirrels exhibited some of his cutest, and most fascinating behaviour yet. (I always say “our” squirrels in quotes, because they’re wild creatures who just choose to visit us, and we’re lucky to have them).
Anyway, there he was, running along the wall that divides our property from the next. And in the midst of his run, he was stopped dead in his tracks…by a gardening glove.
Clearly, he thought this might be some fierce or worrying creature, as walked he sidled up to it on his stomach, then cautiously sniffed it, surveying it from every angle.
Once he’d firmly established that the glove was not in fact, a predator, it was just another garden object over which he could happily bounce.
Of course, i wish the vide camera had been to hand when iIwas watching this. But it wasn’t, so I can only describe this squirrel’s movements…though I’ll certianly search for a video that shows something similar if one exists.
In the meantime though, have you ever seen similar squirrelly behaviour? It makes a lot of sense, particularly when you conisder that there must be so many, potentially dangerous, “unknowns” in a squirrel’s world. (I’ve heard that monkeys show similar caution when encountering ropes, thinking that they might be snakes, so this may well be common in the natural world).
Any thoughts you have would be very welcome, anyway.
As if there wasn’t enough squirrelly controversy, it seems that some scientists think that the UK grey squirrel population is under threat…from larger, black squirrels .
Personally, I’ve never seem a black squirrel, either here in London or anywhere els, so can’t pass much comment. But do check out the story here:
As a resident of a cold climate, I tend to fall into the trap of thinking that all squirrels are cold-weather residents too (which they’re not).
So when a photo comes along of a species of squirrel living somewhere warm, it’s not just a cute squirrel picture, but a great reminder of squirrelly diversity.

I know that the subject of “red squirrels versus grey” is an emotive one in the UK. We love red squirrels too (on the rare occasions when we’ve been able to see them).
But the fact remains that grey squirrels are not primarily responsible for the decline in red squirrels, and as JustSquirrels loves squirrels whatever their species, it is horrific that grey squirrels (who are in the UK as a result of human actions anyway) are now subject to a “cull” in some parts of the UK.
There is an article which explains the issue in much greater depth, plus a link to a petition to make the cull stop, here:
Sadly, the petition is only open to UK residents or nationals.
But wherever you live, please alert people to the fact that grey sqirrels, who are now crucial ambassadors for wildlife in many UK urban areas, now face this disgusting threat.
They can also sign the petition directly at the petition site:
If you thought the squirrel in the last post was cute, check out this video, which features the smallest baby squirrels I’ve ever seen, being rescued.
The video is a bit long, and the “squirrelly part” is mostly near the beginning, but there’s also a tear-jerking visit to an animal hospital in it too.
(It also underlines just how much knowledge you need to have before taking on the task…would you know what to do with a squirrel who seemed to be abandoned? Naturally, the story is also accompanied by an impossibly cute squirrel photo.)
It’s worth saying of course, that in the US, there are licensed wildlife rehabilitators whose job it is to care for these squirrelly orphans. In the UK, it’s a bit different (definitely enough material for a whole other post).
A friend of mine doesn’t believe that Twiggy, the water-ski-ing squirrel actually exists/ever existed. (And this is despite the fact that another friend actually sent me a birthday card last year, featuring the same.
Anyway, just to prove to my sceptical friend that Twiggy is/was much more than a piece of CGI, here’s a lovely video showing her in action. Enjoy!
