Squirrel Sounds

People often want to know which sounds noises and calls their squirrels make.

If you’re one of them, help is at hand. Although the grey squirrels on our patch have never obliged with sound just at the moment recording equipment is around, there’s a great video which captures perfectly the noise of a squirrel vigorously and vocally defending itself/its territory or food supply.

Have a listen and you’ll see what we mean. Then, the next time you hear that sound, you’ll know, no, it isn’t a duck or other type of bird, but an outraged squirrel!

Enjoy!

£100,000 for Squirrel Safety?

Now, we all know that squirrels are priceless. So in one way, it’s briulliant news that the Scottish authorities have decided to put up a £100,000 wildlife bridge (about $200,000) as part of a planned new bypass. (See http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/2008/05/26/new-100k-road-bridge-will-help-save-scotland-s-red-squirrels-86908-20429763/ for the full story)

On the ohter hand though, might such an expensive solution actually cause more criticism than it refutes, given that squirrels will happily scamper over nearly anything, and might not need a 100K construction to help them do so?

We’re in two minds about this-how about you?

Squirrel Picture: Another Great Close Up

Photographers seem to be getting ever-more skilled at taking squirrel pictures.

The photographer “Teck;s” patience has been rewarded with the beautiful shot of a huge grey squirrel you can find here:

Black Squirrels, Red Tails?

Bob Lee, a nature watcher  from Wisconsin, has apprently observed at least one black squirrel with a red tail. He explains very eloquently whay this should be unlikely to happen at the end of this article:

http://www.couleenews.com/articles/2008/05/23/features/lee.txt

But it got me thinking about ehether anyone out there (maybe you) has seen squirrels with two distinct colours of fur that wouldn’t nomally be there (eg black and grey, red and grey, etc).
If you have, please let us know!

A Feelgood UK Squirrel Story

At last, after various less-than-great squirrel stories from the UK on this blog, here’s a really cute one…Plus, it proves that squirrels will “imprint” onto other creatures (ie think that the next living thing it sees is its mother, broadly) just as ducks, dogs and cats have been proven to do.

The story is here:

Squirrel Video: Squirrels Eat Cookies Too!

And it’s back to YouTube for the latest uplifting squirrel video.

Yes, we know that squirrels probably shouldn’t be encouraged to eat cookies or biscuits becaus of the salt/sugar content etc…but this video showing them do just that isn’t half cute!

Enjoy, and please say a big thankyou to youtuber “pineapplefriedrice” as you do so.

Squirrels in Danger

Grey squirrels face a new threat. I meant to blog about this yesterday, but when it was the only squirrelly news that pooped up in several places, I just couldn’t face it.

Anyway, here goes. In parts of the UK, grey squirrel meat is being touted as “ethical”, on the grounds that grey squirrels threaten reds.

What can I say? Just please, please do anything you can to stop this barbaric and disgusting idea.

NB. Sadly, this also means that I’m having second thoughts about posting a planned “where to find grey squirrels in London”, as their proximity to restaurants chi-chi restaurants could endanger them.

So sorry to be the bearer of such sad tidings, but hope it inspires everyone reading this to fight back, for the squirrels’ sake.

Squirrel Feeders Make Sense (Again)

Squirrel feeders eventually make sense to even those who swore they’d never get one and only wanted to feed the birds.

Or so it would seem from this lovely story (which has ultra-cute pictures of a squirrel squeezing inside a bird-feeder to grab seeds.

(That link is ling, and may well need cutting and pasting to work. It is worth it though!)
Enjoy!
