Do Squirrels Eat Coconuts?

The question of what squirrels like to eat is one we’re asked here more than any other. On the question of coconut, it can vary from squirrel to squirrel, and country to country (eg. a palm squirrel is more likely to see coconuts more frequently than an Eastern Grey).

Nonetheless, I have often seen grey squirrels spiriting away halves of coconut meant for birds.
They key word here though, may be halves. If the pictures at:

 http://10000birds.com/ambitious-squirrel.htm

are anything to go by, it seems that getting into a whole coconut may be beyond even an ingenious squirrel’s reach.

However, if you know differently, please get in touch!

Squirrel Bungee-Action Video

Squirrel Bungee feeders provide as much fun for humans as they do challenge for squirrels.

But it’s the kind of thing you sometimes have to see in action to get the point. Which is where this video from “capatootie” on YouTube comes in…

Enjoy, and if that’s got you keen to give your squirrels even more bounce, you can read more about squirrel bungees here.

Grey & Black Squirrels on Radio

Well, OK, the squirrels themselves weren’t doing the talking, despite the title of this post. However, just this afternoon, there was a fascinating feature on the radio about the diffeences between greay (gray) squirrels and their-genetically-mutated-but-otherwise-identical black squirrel counterparts.

It should be available for download for at least a week here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio4_aod.shtml?radio4/shared_earth

And just to be clear, the feature is the first item in the rogramme, not the whole programme itself.

Enjoy!

Squirrel of the Month

Someone has beaten us to it! There is indeed a “Squirrel of the Month” contest, but (sadly) it isn’t ours.

That honour goes to the local paper for Thousand Oaks (aptly called “The Acorn”.

But for a whole back catalogue of squirrelly antics, squirrels on feeders, etc, go here:

Do Squirrels, “Talk” with their Tails?

Here at JustSquirrels, we’ve long suspected that squirrels “talk” (or at least express their feelings) with their tails, as well as via sounds.

There’s a YouTube video which illustrates this rather well. All thanks to its creator,”twjaniak” courtesy of whom this video shows a previously-peaceful squirrel begin to twirl and move his tail extravagantly, after hearing what sounds like a call from another squirrel.

Have a look and see what you think (it’s very cute in any event!):

Apologies that squirrelly stories haven’t flowed so much this week.

Scouring the Net though, we’ve found another lovely account of how squirrels can be really reasourceful (and we’re hoping thta the person who wrote it is coming around to squirrelly charms!)

You can find the tale here:

Red Squirrels Fight Back

As you know, we love all squirrels alike here. But the demise of the red squirrel is an important issue in the UK, so it’s good to see that the reds are fighting back (with a little help from humans) in a special breeding programme in Kent.

For the full story (and the cutest picture of a baby red squirrel you’ve ever seen, visit:

Squirrels and Cables: A Mystery

Much as we love squirrels here, the plain fact remains that occasionally they do seem to choose virtual suicide by knawing through power cables.

Sometimes, these can be within the lofts of unfortunate householders. But large instiutions aren’t immune-apparently Los Angeles airport’s air conditioning was taken out recently by a squirrel knawing through cable.

Why do they do this? No-one seems sure, but we’ll continue to dig for a definitive answer. In the meantime, the top three explantions we’ve found are:

1) Neurosis/frustration.  (Oh please. In the nineteenth century, people said that about women…We’re not going to insult squirrelly intelligence in the same way).

 2) The need to knaw. Squirrel’s teeth, like those of all rodents grow all the time. So, many people believe that the “need to knaw” which this creates (in order to wear their teeth down) makes squirrels partial to the resistance of cables.

3) The most interesting explanation so far is that a mineral-deficient squirrel may smell minerals in a cable, and thus feel compelled to knaw them. For more on this idea (and proof that this problem has been around for many years) see the article at:

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,861824,00.html

More on this as soon as we sniff it out ourselves!
