Bald Squirrels?

If anybody out there has a definitive answer as to why one poor grey squirrel has been found almost completely bald, then the Tiggiwinkles animal hospital here in the UK may be keen to hear from you.

It seems that the poor bald creature was brought in to the renowned wildlife hospital some time ago, but the hospital still can’t be sure as to the cause of “Smoothie’s” problem.

(As a sidenote here, if you live in the UK, see more of  Tiggiwinkles on Channel 5’s “Wild Animal ER most evenings at the moment…and yes,  cute rescued squirrels feature amongst the patients).

It seems that genetic disorders and mites (amongst other causes) have been explored in relation to this squirrel, and yet still, no-one can be sure. But if you do have the answer, or just want to find out more, go here:

Squirrel”Chilling Out”-Video

If you see a squirrel lying down and spread eagled, this isn’t necessarily a cause for concern. He or she may simply be cooling down, especially at this time of year.

After all, having fur is a warm business, and though squirrels do have summer and winter coats, on a boiling hot day, the fastest way for them to cool down is to “spread eagle themselves out, so that the greatest possible amount of their surface area is exposed and letting out heat.

Other people have also suggested that squirrels may also lie down in this way to signal submissiveness, as any other creatures do.

Of course, if the squirrel seems distressed, can’t open its eyes, is in poor condition, doesn’t move after some minutes, or has an injury, they probably are in need of attention from an animal sanctuary or rehabilitator.

An example of a squirrel who was in all likelihood just chilling out simply “chilling out” is shown in this YouTube video by “rockgirlsteffi” that we’ve just found. Enjoy!

Video of “Cyril the Squirrel”

“Cyril the Squirrel, you may remember, is a grey squirrel we talked about a few posts back, made famous by a UK newspaper for his ability to grab crackers using hanging flower-baskets as a swing. Many do, we know. (And as for the crackers as squirrel food, it’s a new one on us, but this squirrel seems to like it).

Anyway, not contentent with just having his picture taken, the now-famous Cyril, from Darlington UK, now demonstrates his athletic prowess on video, here:

Enjoy-though be warned, the video contains scenes of impending feeder destruction by this squirrel!

Do Squirrels Eat Coconuts?

The question of what squirrels like to eat is one we’re asked here more than any other. On the question of coconut, it can vary from squirrel to squirrel, and country to country (eg. a palm squirrel is more likely to see coconuts more frequently than an Eastern Grey).

Nonetheless, I have often seen grey squirrels spiriting away halves of coconut meant for birds.
They key word here though, may be halves. If the pictures at:

 http://10000birds.com/ambitious-squirrel.htm

are anything to go by, it seems that getting into a whole coconut may be beyond even an ingenious squirrel’s reach.

However, if you know differently, please get in touch!

Do Squirrels, “Talk” with their Tails?

Here at JustSquirrels, we’ve long suspected that squirrels “talk” (or at least express their feelings) with their tails, as well as via sounds.

There’s a YouTube video which illustrates this rather well. All thanks to its creator,”twjaniak” courtesy of whom this video shows a previously-peaceful squirrel begin to twirl and move his tail extravagantly, after hearing what sounds like a call from another squirrel.

Have a look and see what you think (it’s very cute in any event!):

How *Not* to Get Squirrels out of the House

Whilst it might sometimes be OK to put small amounts of pepper dust on prized flowerbeds to encourage squirrels to stick to their feeders, a recent story shows that pepper spray most certainly is not.

Fortunately, the squirrel came out on top, as you’ll see here: (warning, the accompanying photo of one poor grey squirrel “dressed” as a gangster may not be to everyone’s taste):

Squirrel Video: Squirrels Eat Cookies Too!

And it’s back to YouTube for the latest uplifting squirrel video.

Yes, we know that squirrels probably shouldn’t be encouraged to eat cookies or biscuits becaus of the salt/sugar content etc…but this video showing them do just that isn’t half cute!

Enjoy, and please say a big thankyou to youtuber “pineapplefriedrice” as you do so.

Squirrels in Danger

Grey squirrels face a new threat. I meant to blog about this yesterday, but when it was the only squirrelly news that pooped up in several places, I just couldn’t face it.

Anyway, here goes. In parts of the UK, grey squirrel meat is being touted as “ethical”, on the grounds that grey squirrels threaten reds.

What can I say? Just please, please do anything you can to stop this barbaric and disgusting idea.

NB. Sadly, this also means that I’m having second thoughts about posting a planned “where to find grey squirrels in London”, as their proximity to restaurants chi-chi restaurants could endanger them.

So sorry to be the bearer of such sad tidings, but hope it inspires everyone reading this to fight back, for the squirrels’ sake.

Squirrel and the Glove

One of “our” squirrels exhibited some of his cutest, and most fascinating behaviour yet. (I always say “our” squirrels in quotes, because they’re wild creatures who just choose to visit us, and we’re lucky to have them).
Anyway, there he was, running along the wall that divides our property from the next. And in the midst of his run, he was stopped dead in his tracks…by a gardening glove.

Clearly, he thought this might be some fierce or worrying creature, as walked he sidled up to it on his stomach, then cautiously sniffed it, surveying it from every angle.

Once he’d firmly established that the glove was not in fact, a predator, it was just another garden object over which he could happily bounce.

Of course, i wish the vide camera had been to hand when iIwas watching this. But it wasn’t, so I can only describe this squirrel’s movements…though I’ll certianly search for a video that shows something similar if one exists.
In the meantime though, have you ever seen similar squirrelly behaviour? It makes a lot of sense, particularly when you conisder that there must be so many, potentially dangerous, “unknowns” in a squirrel’s world. (I’ve heard that monkeys show similar caution when encountering ropes, thinking that they might be snakes, so this may well be common in the natural world).

Any thoughts you have would be very welcome, anyway.
