Baby Squirrel Rescuer

If you need a bit of a lift this fine Monday morning, check out this story of a lady who rescues abandoned squirrels.

http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/041208/ner_267571128.shtml

(It also underlines just how much knowledge you need to have before taking on the task…would you know what to do with a squirrel who seemed to be abandoned?  Naturally, the story is also accompanied by an impossibly cute squirrel photo.)

It’s worth saying of course, that in the US, there are  licensed wildlife rehabilitators whose job it is to care for these squirrelly orphans. In the UK, it’s a bit different (definitely enough material for a whole other post).

For now though, as ever, enjoy!

Picture of a Squirrel’s Nest (or “Drey”)

Picture of a Squirrel’s Nest or DreyPeople quite often wonder what a squirrel’s nest (officially called a “drey”) looks like.

In this picture, we’ve been able to get a reaPicture of a Squirrel’s Nest or Dreysonably clear image of a grey squirrel’s drey.

Although it’s about the size of a large bird’s nest, a winter drey is held together by mud and leaves (bird’s nest are usually wholly or mostly made of twigs, and have a neater appearance).

Hope this helps to make drey-spotting easier.
